Development of Advanced Smart Ventilation Controls for Residential Applications

This study examined the use of zoned ventilation systems using a coupled CONTAM/EnergyPlus model for new California dwellings. Several smart control strategies were developed with target halving ventilation-related energy use, largely through reducing dwelling rates based on zone occupancy. The controls evaluated annual consumption relative to continuously operating non-zoned, code-compliant mechanical systems. also from an indoor air quality perspective equivalency approach, where personal concentration contaminant strategy is compared that would have occurred operating, non-zoned system. Individual occupant concentrations calculated following contaminants concern: moisture, CO2, particles, and generic contaminant. Zonal saved by outside airflow achieved typical reductions in 10% 30%, 7% savings unzoned control. However, this was at expense increased some most cases. In addition, care required design evaluation zonal controls, because may reduce exposure contaminants, while increasing others.
